How to Analyze Balun S-Parameters

Step-by-step balun analysis: verify amplitude balance (|S21|=|S31| within ±0.5 dB), phase balance (180° differential output), input return loss S11, and port isolation S23 from .s3p file.

Balun S-Parameter Analysis Procedure

  1. Load balun .s3p file in RF View
  2. SNP Converter → Port Extraction: extract P1→P2 as "bal_pos.s2p" and P1→P3 as "bal_neg.s2p"
  3. Load both .s2p files simultaneously in S-Parameter Plot
  4. S21 dB overlay: both should be −3 dB (or spec'd coupling) at operating frequency
  5. Delta between two traces = amplitude imbalance (target <±0.5 dB)
  6. Switch to Phase view: Phase(P1→P3) − Phase(P1→P2) should equal −180°
  7. Delta marker: reads exact phase balance error vs 180°
